5 Tips to Kickstart Your Health Journey

Embarking on a new health journey and trying something new can leave you feeling excited, but also overwhelmed. Where the heck do I start?! No matter what your ultimate goal is, taking some initial steps forward is crucial. Here are five tips to help you kickstart your health journey and set yourself up for success:

  1. Define Your Goals.
Before diving headfirst into any health journey, take the time to clearly define your goals. What do you hope to achieve? Think of setting SMART goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely to pave the way for success. This breakdown will provide you with a roadmap to follow and help you stay focused and motivated along the way.
  2. Start Small, then Build.
One of the most common mistakes people make when beginning a healthy journey is trying to do too much, too soon. Instead of attempting a complete overhaul of your lifestyle overnight; focus on making small, sustainable changes that you can build upon over time. For example, instead of going from ten sodas a week to zero, start at a more realistic spot if needed. Maybe you are going to drink five a week instead and replace the other five with water. Be realistic and meet yourself where you are at. Small daily habit changes can add up to significant results over time.
  3. Make change enjoyable.
There is nothing fun about adding exercise you hate and foods you don’t enjoy. That is not going to equate to lasting results. It will be easier to commit to changes if you actually enjoy them. Whether it’s hiking, dancing, swimming, or playing a team sport, find activities that make you feel good and incorporate them into your exercise routine. Find ways to add a variety of foods into your day. If you are unsure of how to do that, talk with a dietitian to help problem solve!
  4. Tune into your nutrition.
A healthy diet is a cornerstone of any successful health journey. Instead of fixating on fad diets or restrictive eating plans, focus on nourishing your body with whole, nutrient-dense foods. Aim to fill your plate with a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and healthy fats. Remember, it’s not about perfection but rather making consistent, balanced choices that support your overall health and goals.
  1. Work on your environment and who you surround yourself with.
Surrounding yourself with like-minded people who support and encourage your health goals can make all the difference. Having a support system in place can help keep you accountable and motivated, especially during challenging times. Additionally, don’t be afraid to seek professional guidance from a registered dietitian or healthcare provider who can provide personalized advice tailored to your specific needs.

Embarking on a new journey is a deeply personal and rewarding experience. By setting clear goals, starting small, finding ways to make it enjoyable, focusing on nutrition, and cultivating a supportive environment, you can lay a strong foundation for long-term success. Remember, it’s not about perfection but rather progress, consistency, and self-care. So, take that first step today and embrace the journey toward a healthier, happier you! If you are unsure of where/how to start, be sure to talk to a dietitian. Luckily, I know one 🙂
